Department of Child Support Services

Sometimes, military members who are stationed in California are contacted by the Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) in the state for support issues filed by the custodial parent. If this happens to you and you are stationed in California because of military orders, please call an attorney before you respond to the paperwork or do anything! You may subject yourself to jurisdiction of the California courts unbeknownst to you or an attorney who does not deal with jurisdictional issues in family law as they pertain to the military.

If you are stationed outside of California and receive paperwork from California's DCSS for support issues because the custodial parent lives in California, again, please contact an attorney before you respond to the paperwork or do anything! If you respond, you may subject yourself to Jurisdiction of the California courts even though you do not live in California or have never been to California!

Please call an experienced attorney. Of course we would like you to call our firm, but seriously, just make sure you speak to an experienced attorney who is licensed in California and has extensive experience with jurisdictional issues in family law as they pertain to the military.
